(From Our Own Correspondent). The Ranger Football Club’s social and dance, held in Peggie’s Hall on September 12th, was well attended am! quite an enjoyable evening was spent. The Club intend to hold these dances fortnightly in future. The Ranger Ladies’ Hockey team journeyed to Westport last week to play in the cup finals. In their match with Karamea they were the winners by four goals to three, but they lost to the Wesley team, the score being seven goals to one. The All Black footballers journeyed to Denniston on Sunday to play the local team, by which they were defeated, the scores being three goals to one. The monthly meeting of the Alillerton Aliners’ Union was held on September 15th. Correspondence was received and dealt with. A circular from the “Grey River Argus” Board was read out, also a circular from the National Secretary of the United Aline Workers. It was decided that a deputation interview the management concerning an outstanding minimum wage dispute. The Alillerton miners have been working full time, and have ten shifts to draw for the coming pay. One wonders, however, how long this will last now that the Stockton miners are resuming work. A general meeting of the unemployed workers was held on Sunday. Correspondence was received and dealt with. A letter received from Air McIntyre stated that the six garden sections had been granted at the nominal rental of six shillings per year. These were accepted, and will be utilised for the growing of vegetables. One member raised the question of whether a National Executive of the U.W.AI. was. in existence. After a little discussion its existence was made perfectly clear to all, when the secretary read the correspondence he had received from the National Secretary, stating that all branches of the U.W.AI. are requested to send in their dues to the national body so that they can function more efficiently in the interests of the unemployed workers, and further stating that the unemployed must unite so as to resist any further cuts

in their allocations. It was also requested that the local branches of the U.W.AI. should send women delegates to a conference which is to take place at Wellington in the near future. This was left over in the meantime. An invitation was extended to women to attend the unemployed meetings in tho future. The delegation who were appointed to interview the local Unemployment Committee of Westport, reported thereon. The object of the Millerton deputation was to secure their full allocation for the three working weeks, and also some assistance for the stand-down week. One of the main, points raised by the deputation was the difference in the prices of commodities on the Hill as compared with other places. The Unemployment Committee decided to write the Unemployment Board explaining the position, and also explaining that increased allocations are necessary to relieve the present distress on the Hill. As regards the Mayor’s fund, the Mayor stated that there was nothing available. and that this fund would close down shortly. No better results were met with from the Hospital Board Secretary, he stating nothing could possibly be done till all the members of the Board met. Tho Secretary receivi ed a letter from the Hospital Board stating that the unemployed workers* request was out of their jurisdiction, being the responsibility of the Unemployment Board. Mr Adams gave his report from the Unemployment Committee, stressing the necessity for the combined action of all unemployed workers under the West Coast District- Council against tho introduction of the new scheme. A motion was carried that the unemployed do all in their power to assist such a scheme being put into force in the district, and 1 further that the secretary request tho I West Coast Council of Unemployed [ Workers to try ami arrange a conferI once with the object of formulating some policy to combat the said scheme. An invitation h-s been sent to Major Pharayan. from the Unemployed workers of Millerton. Major Pharazan. who has lately returned from an extended tour of Russia, is lecturing through out New Zealand on the conditions of the workers in Soviet Russia, ami also on political economy. If the visit eventuates, Major Pharazan would be assured of a large attendance of the Millerton public.
