WEST COAST SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the v.held on Tuesday evening, a large number of members be.nj present. The subject for the evening was ‘‘The Culture and Classification of the Daffodil."'’ The Chairman, Mr Greenwood, intioducc-d the subject, stating that the object was to inform the members how ?o classify the different varieties, Trumpet, Incom, Leedsii. Bar’.ii, Poetaz, Poeticus, Jonquil, Tazzetta. etc. Membeis brought along quite a creaitable display of spring flowers. Polyanthus, iris, jiansios and violets, as well as the different varieties of daffodils, bein»< well represented. A short art-cle on the culture and hydridizing of the polyanthi, by 1). Tannock, .way read, also a vary instructive treatise o n the culture of daffodils, by the late Mr A E. Lowe, gardner i n charge of Sir Beaton Rhodes’ Otahuna bulb gardens Preparation of soil, manuring, planting, grouping, diseases and thc : r remedies, wct p fully and plainly explained'. Mr F. Kendrick then explained, the diff r ent types of characteristics of the flowers taking examples from the. blooms ) n th e room. A beautiful bi-col-our Trumpet variety, General Allenby, grown by Mr I). Cameron, was easily the besj. bloom on view, and was much admired, also beZng coninvended by the lecturer. A point that, puzzles the amateur, where thm Incom ceases and the Barrii starts was explained. Mi Kendrick then answered questions, incidentally giving very valuable advice as to how to grow pansies and violets for <'xhibirio-n. Questions were asked and answered. The Chairman then in formed the members that the Show on Saturday next af the Druid’s Hall, was assured of success. Entries wer- coming in freely, blooms were being sent from Christchurch. a nd a trade exhibit would also be staged. A vote of thanks for his instructive l?sso n on classification and points to strive for in cultivation, concluded the meeting.
