HESLIN CUP Runanga Beat Blackball The semi-final of the Heslin Cup was played at Dunollie on Saturday under ideal conditions, but before only a fair attendance. The game was quiet and nothing approaching spectacular football was witnessed, but: nevertheless, it was interesting and closely fought, Runanga eventually, winning by three goals to one. The junior game between Runanga and Technical, also played at Dunollie, resulted in a win for Technical. Runanga and Technical thirds drew, while Grey mouth thirds triumphed over Alarist. At Cobden the visiting Christchurch Alarist third graders defeated the Greymouth Club junior eleven by the odd goal in seven. RUNANGA I. (3) v. BLACKBALL I.; (1). The teams were as follows: — Blackball: Thompson; Anderson, Swinley; McArthur. AlcGhie, Alorrow; Clark, McGougan, Penman, AlcNichol. and Lowrey. Runanga: Ennor; Airns, Gore; Hillhouse, Pattinson, Clark; O’Connell, Timlin, Alalpass, White and Craig. Runanga won the toss and took the advantage of the slope of the ground. The teams took some time to settle down. Runanga were the first to go in, O’Connell sending over two fruitless crosses. Alal])ass forced a corner which was cleared to Pattinson, who sent on to White, to Alalpass, to O’Connell, who forced another corner. Shortly after this was cleared Ilillhousc and AlcNic.ol met when jumping to head the ball, with the result that thc latter was unable to continue for some time. Alalpass received a good opportunity in front of goal but shot well over. At thc. other end Penman did the same. A fault by White and Hillhouse temporarily relieved Blackball and sent them away but Lowrey shot by. The play so far had been very even, each end being visited in turn. AlcGhie essayed a light shot which Ennor had I no trouble in clearing. Alalpass and! Timlin went in but Swinley robbed them and cleared well. Timlin with a good shot forced Swinley to corner which White shot over. Anderson robbed Alalpass and O’Connell shot over. Penman went down but Gore robbed him and cleared. AlcGhie tested Ennor with a long shot. Swinley shot a free kick by and Timlin went down but shot over when well placed. Runanga forced a corner but Timlin’s cross was cleared by Thompson. White essayed a light shot which Thompson had no difiicutly in clearing. Runanga forced three corners in quick succession but none of them were used to advantage. O’Connell put a great cross over to Alalpass, he failed to receive, but White was there and mad'* no mistake.—Runanga 1, Blackball 0. Half-time came shortly after.

Runanga commenced the second half with a nice movement, the ball traversing the forward line for Thompson to eventually clear. Hillhouse then forced a corner which Craig shot behind. Lowrey received ami beat Ennor with a high shot. — Runanga 3, Blackball 1. Nothing of note occurred until the end and the final whistle blew with the scores unchanged. TECH 11. (2) v. RUNANGA 11. (1). This game was played at. Dunollio as a curtain-raiser to the Heslin Cup game and proved an interesting although far from brilliant struggle. Technical were without the services of Vaughan (centre forward) and Lee (goalkeeper), and on the face of this they must be congratulated on their win. Technical won the toss but very little advantage was gained from it. They were unlucky early in thc first spell, Smyth sending in two good shots, thc first of which was high, and the second, from a free kick, being saved by thc goalkeeper. Runanga, however, were the first to score, Warwick sending in a nice shot which completely beat Hassan. The first half was very even and no further scoring took place. Technical secured a goal early in the second half, but the referee did not see the happening and it -was disallowed; Hewison, going up fast, sent the ball hurtling into his own net, when meaning to give a corner, but it was picked out before the referee saw it in the net. and he ruled . a corner. Technical were now having the best of the play and Smyth. Jackson and Pattinson tested the Runanga goalie with good shots. Tech equalised when Smyth sent in a good shot off a free kick for Sharp to finish it off for a nice goal. These two players also scored the winning goal in a similar manner, the game ending: Technical 2, Runanga 1. Brown, Hewison, Richmond and ! Hewison were the pick of the Runanga
