NEW MARKET FOR N.Z.
Italy’s Needs butter and wool (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 29. The possibility of establishing direct trading connections, :i-a:t. and wool between New Zealand and Italy is being explored by Signor Guilio Ccrioli, who lias come to the Dominion, with credentials from a number of Milanese and other Italian firms, authorising him to investigate the conditions under which export of New Zealand produce may be ar ranged with advantage to his principals. Although as yet he lias visited only Wellington, and one or two small towns in the South Island, he expresses the conviction that with the return of normal conditions, a big trade capable of being" worked up between the two countries. lie mentioned that Italy's butter imports last year wer.? 30011 tons. It. was difficult to say how much Italy was capable of Consuming in normal times, but if the price of New Zealand butter were reasonable and the present high quality assured, he thought there was a big chance of the bulk of the importations being made from Now Zealand. Tn regard to the tariff imposed b\ Italy to protect the local industry there, it was very likely this would either be reduced or abolished altogether. There was a big market »n Italy for New Zealand wool and ho ha dalready sent to his principals, samples for inspection. The opening of actual negotiations for contracts with New Zealand exporters will depend on instructions which Signor Ccrioli expects to receive (from Italy. Meantime he is confer i ring with the Minister of Agriculture, ami Departmental and export control authorities.
