In round four, Campbell stung Palmer with a left hook and forced him, to the ropes. Palmer, however, came back with a two-handed attack, and squared matters. In round five Palmer continued to score with the left. It was apparent that 1/ody punches hurt Campbell. The New Zealander was . bleeding profusely in the next round, when Palmer continued his vigorous onslaught, the Australian piling up points in round seven, repeatedly slamming Campbell’s gory face. The _ latter’s defence was too open.

Palmer had also the better of matters in the clinches, stinging Campbell with sharp upper cuts. After more severe punishment in round eight, the referee asked Campbell if he wanted to continue. He signified that he did, but in the nint[i Campbell was floored for a count of eight, and after further punishment the referee stopped the match. An additional attraction was the State Welterweight Championship, in which Wally Hancock (10.6) out-point-ed Billy .Grime (10.5) over ten rounds.

At a meeting of the preymouth Association held on Monday evening it was decided to match Archie Hughes and Harry Johns for a match hem 6,n June 3. On the notification of these mens’ acceptance, the Association will arrange for preliminary bouts.

In reply to the Greymouth Association’s request that Lowe should meet. Croft, the following letter was received from the New Zealand Boxing Association:—“l am directed by the Council fp acknowledge yours of 20th inst. and to state the does not propose to call on Lowe to meet Croft. Lowe is definitely nominated for the fiamoa, I have to point out that the three selected boxers for the Olympic Games were all recommended by the throe referees from whom the Council asked to report. The referees were: Mr Stewart (Wellington), Mr Kiljuartin (Dunedin), and Mt McLean (Auckland). Both Mr Kilwartin and Mr Stewart recommended Lowe should go as a middleweight, and in doing so thpy must have concluded Lowe was superior to Croft, despite the fact that Croft won the middleweight title. Mr McLean placed Lowe as being his first, choice or ;inclusion. Because a boy is a titleholder, does not neees [sarily mean he is up to Olympic standard. The Council hag been guided by the recommendation of the referees it appointed, and as stated above, has no intention at this stage, to make any alteration- (signed) G. P. Aldridge. Secretary.”
