BROTHERS DROWNED. (Per Press Association). WAIPUKURAU, May 3. Confirmation of the drowning of two brothers, James George Symes, aged 2s, and .Alan Symes, aged 21, 1 while duck shooting on the Purimu Lake, near Wanstcad yesterday, was obtained this, morning, when both bodies were recovered, and brought 1o Waipukyrau for the inquest. —— I HOTEL FIRE. NAPIER, May 3. The Plumptpp Park Hotel at Meanee, six miles from Napier, wits totally destroyed with the contents, by fire last night. The house contained sixteen rooms. STATE SUPERANNUATION FUND, i ■WELLINGTON. May 3. Owjig to the protracted nature of .its investigations, the inquiry of the departmental committee appointed about two years ago to look into the state of the Public Service, Teachers’ and Railways’ superannuation funds, has been lost sight of during recent months. It had be : en expected that the report ,of the committee would have been in the hands of the Government before the present session commenced, but no indication is yet avail- \ able when the committee will com- I plete the work.

The possibility that th,e report will not be presented in view of the fact that the National Expenditure Commission is inquiring into the same matter, was mentioned by Mr Forbes He said that he was unable to say whether it was proposed to adopt that course. The committee had been particularly useful, and had 'to deal with some difficult poinlts, from time to time. It was possible that the data which had been collected up to the present would be placed before the Royal Commission, and thus assist it to arrive at recommendations based on the evidence the departmental committee had adduced.
