GREY BRANCH MEETING. The regular meeting of the Grey Branch of the New Zealand Education al Institute was held in Trinity Hall, Greymouth, on Saturday, the President, Mr V. W. Colville, presiding over a large attendance of members. Various remits to come before the annual conference to be held shortly in Wellington, were discussed, and general endorsement was given to the views of the Grey branch delegate, Mr V. W. Colville.' At the conclusion of the routine business, the meeting was addressed by Mr S. J. Irwin, Inspector of Schools, who spoke on various matters of deep interest to those present. Approved methods of teaching composition, reading, nature study, arithmetic, and writing, were graphically expounded. Mr Irwin also explained the procedure to be adopted in the awarding of environment certificates? to those schools which shall have improved their environment sufficiently during any twelve months. Though environment certificates have been in vogue in some other districts for some time, the issue of them to Westland schools will be a new departure. At the conclusion of the address, Mr Irwin was unanimously accorded a hearty vote of thanks, which was carried with acclamation. In replying, Mr Irwin thanked the branch for the vote of thanks, and, in the course of his remarks, drew attention to the fact that not only he, the speaker, but also Mr Strong, Director of Education, greatly appreciated the splendid work for the good of education being accomplished by the Now Zealand Educational Institute. On behalf of the Grey Branch, N.Z. E.T., Mr Colville thanked Mr Irwin for his expression of goodwill towards the Institute.
