RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The infant child, of Mrs M. Fitzgibbons, of Runanga, had rather a lucky .escape from serious injury yesterday •afternoon. Mrs Fitzgibbons left The child in its pram outsid c the office of the Runanga Borough Council, adjacent tG the footpath, whilst doing some business in ,the Borough office, when a car, owned by Mr Albert Ford and driven by Mr Gordon Wylde, backed into the pram in the act of turning in front of the office, with the result that the pram was knocked over and smash, cd somewhat. Fortunately, the child, although receiving a great fright, was not otherwise . hurt. The presence of the p'ram ap'pa*cntly escaped the notice of the driver of the car. The Runanga Ladies’ Croquet Club ar e holding an open day on Saturday next, whe n the greens will be offic ally closed for the season. The proceeds of the afternoon are to be devoted for the relief of the local unemployed. The green is to be top dressed. Games and competitions will be played and afternoon tea will be served

BOROUGH AFFAIRS The monthly meeting of the Runanga Borough Council was held last evening, there being present, the Mayor (Mr R. McTaggart), Crs. Williams. Price, Oakley,. Bowes and Duggan. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. R. Southward. The Mayor’s action in allowing (the Cricket Club to shift their pavilion was endorsed. The No. 12 Highway District Council ’s report w.a s received as satisfactory. Building permits to the value of £l7. to Mr I. Powell, were approved. Accounts amounting to £42 3s 2d, were passed for payment. The Overseer’s report and the Power Board and Hospital Boards’ rep'resenta tives’ reports were adopted as satisfactory. Lt was unanimously decided to have footpaths constructed by relief workers i n McGowan Street, immediately. It was decided that final notices be sent out to ratepayers, whose rates were outstanding.

It was decided to write to Mr JI. E. Holland, M.P., re. meeting him along with the Minister of Mines, on his visit to Runanga. The Mayor, Cr. Bowes (DeputyMayor) and Cr. Price, were appointed as a deputation. It was decided that no persons be allowed to frequent the children’s playground. Koterc Domain, after dark, owing to damage being done to the swings, slides, etc.
