A WESTLAND GRIEVANCE.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I would like to beg a little space to air a grievance that is only typical of many that might be cited in connection with the administration of local affairs in the Hokitika district. 1 refer to the fact that in the matter of repairing the County Cham-, bers at Hokitika tenders were not called, as they should have been. Now, Sir, there are many carpenters in Hokitika who have had little work for a considerable time, a fact that is very well-known, and it is indeed a disgraceful state of affairs when public jobs are not allowed to be tendered for. If the public representatives are not alive to their responsibility, it is time ratepayers wakened up and saw that a fair chance is given to the small man in the trade, instead of all jobs being given one firm. Do the Councillors manage these affairs, or is, it a case of the tail wagging the dog? —I am, etc., CARPENTER. Hokitika, April 28.
