Anticipating the May Day demonstration, the police raided the headquarters of the Communists here, arresting one man, seizing books and banners, and two dozen wooden clubs, declared to be similar to the weapons used against the police in the recent street riots. The civic authorities granted a permit for a demonstration on Sunday, after extracting promises that there would be no parade.
