ANZAC DAY

LONDON OBSERVANCE. (Aus. & N-Z. Cable Assn) LONDON, April 25. Sir 11. Ryr’e presided at the British Empire Service League’s Anzae Dav luncheon. Thof'e in attendance included Brigadier-General J. H. Cannan (New Zealand) and Lieutenant-Colonel Fitzherbert. Sir W. Birdwood, responding to the toast of those who served at Gallipoli, said that the world provided no better examples of -real democracies than Australia and New Zealand. They would nveer fight unless they believed the cause righteous, yet their men gave their lives willingly at Anzae knowing diey fought in a righteous cause. He did not desire to overlook anything of the bravery of the Twenty-ninth Division, but the Anzaes fought with almost reckless bravery.

Sir T. M. Wilford, toasting the Ottawa Conference., said that any delegation going there with the intention of winning would be an enemy, because if anyone won some other member of the Emp'ro lost. Whatever the outcome, he hoped there would be a permanent Empire Economic Council Even if reciprocity agreements were reached at Ottawa, there must be constant liaison to carry out the same. New Zealand was straining at the leash in the race for Empire prosperity.

Canon W. P. Besley, formerly of New Zealand, preached the Anzae Day memorial service at St. Clement Danes. Mr Latham and Sir T. M. WJford read zfie lessons. The latter was suddenly overcome with faintness during the reading and had to allow a church-war-den to complete the lesson. Afterwards Sir T. Wilford placed a wreath on the Cenotaph on behalf of the New Zealand forces, and Lady Wil ford placed one o n behalf of the Vie toria League of New Zealand. HONG KONG, April 25. An impressive ceremony at the Cenotaph this morning, was attended by local Australian and New Zealand residents.
