DIAMOND SLUMP
DE BEERS MINES CLOSING. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). (Received February 19 at 9.10 p.m.) CAPETOWN, February 19. The Directorate of De Beers Diamond Mmes have decided tu close the mines for an indefinite period, pending an improvement in the world’s diamond market. The decision becomes effective on March 31st. If affects fifteen hundred whites, and many thousand natives. It will mean a probable curtailment of expenditure in the Union of wages amounting to two and a-quarter millions sterling. A number of whites will be retained as part time workers. Those dismissed will receive liberal cash payments.
