CHRISTCHURCH DEMAND. PUTS HOSPITAL BOARD IN QUANDARY. (Per Press Association), CHRISTCHURCH, February 19. So heavy has been the demand for outdoor relief that, for the year ending March 31st, the North Canterbury Hospital Board is faced with an expenditure seventy-five per cent, greater than its estimate, which was £20,000. Up to the end of January £27,644 had been spend, and by March 31st the amount is expected to reach £34.000, or £35,000 The Benevolent Committee of the Board is dealing each week with about 1150 applications for outdoor relief, and the Chairman and members spend several days each week at the Hospital interviewing applicants.
