John Farquhar Mcßae was fined £2OO, in default 12 mouths’ imprisonment for conveying spirits on whica the full duty was unpaid. Accused took 17 bottles of whisky to a hairdresser’s shop, where it was seized. The prosecution stated that accused was the distributing agent for an illicit distillery. Maurice Patrick Duffy and William Leonard Brewer, were each sentenced by Justice Kennedy to fix e and a-half years* hard labour for breaking and entering the dwelling of a bank manager at Edendale. His Honor said that they entered the house, masked, and with loaded rifle and sandbag, and both the manager and his wife were attacked. Duffy had been pursuing a criminal course for some time and the attack was very violent. Brewer carried a loaded rifle with which he threatened the manager and wife, and attempted to gag her. His Honor said his past record showed that this crime did not stand alone. Both sentences were cPncurreuv with other sentences. A middle-aged man, Philip Fielding Farn worth, was remanded today on a harge that on February 19, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Charles Luther Lee. £2<>, by falsely representing he would he paying the amount to two detective-sergeants as « bribe to arrange that a bookmaking business carried on by Farnworth and Lee would be free from prosecution. The Magistrate refused to suppress the name.

DISCHARGING OIL IN HARBOUR. AUCKLAND, Feb. nary 19. Henderson and Macfarlane Ltd., as agents for rhe Danish ship, Astoria and the Shell Company of New Zealand, as agents for the Norwegian ship Andrea, were to-day fined £2*s and £59 respectively for discharging oil into the harbour. It was stated that the first ship’s offence was due to a misunderstanding of the Danish officer’s order. The Shell Co. had done all that was possible to help the Harbourmaster.
