MILLERTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Pigeon Club held an old bird race from Ohakune last week-end, the weather being anything but suitable for fast flying. The,owners of the successful flyers were: Mr F. Easton, first; Mr A. Millar, second; Mr G. Swan, third. The distance that the race was cut out in, was something like 467 yards to the minute. The Medical Association’s quarterly general meeting wa s held in Peggie’s Hall ou Sunday last, Mr T. Birchfield presiding. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr Finlayson, the secretarial duties weer taken by Air W e AT. Davies. The chief business was a notice of motion viz., “That thi,< Asocial-ion will not be responsible for any football player being hurt in representative football.” After a good deal of discussion, the motion, was carried unanimously. It seems a great pity that members do not. take a little more interest in their medical meetings, there being only thirty-three members present out of a mmeber.ship of close on four hundred. Owing to ;the financial depression, Mr Rennie has been reluctantly compelled to close down his picture theatre. I am sure Mr Rennie will have the full sympathy of the public of Millerton, as his venture must have cos.t him a considerable sum, while the returns Jiave never been very great. Anyone who now wishes to hear the talkies will have to travel to Stockton or Granity, as your correspondent does not think anybody else will start on the Hill at the present time. It i s rumoured Mr Rennie is contemplating a talkie business in Alurchison, where if is to be hoped he will be more successful. Good luck Jock! The usual weekly euchre tournament was held .in Peggie’s Hall on Tuesday, 17th November The prize-winners were Airs G. Forbes and Air Tom Calder. The local mine has not worked a shift for over three weeks now. According t,o .the rumours, there will not be man yshifts worked th’s side of Christinas. Things have practically reached a crisis now, as the chief storekeeper has been compelled to close down on all credit. It is marvellous how the stoiekeepers have been able to carry on «o long. Several members had been receiving Hospital Board aid when the Hospital Board Chairman was on the Hill during the week-end, but now he has left for the windy city, others will have to await the meeting of the Hospital Board. Ir seems a gerat pity the Board will u<>t allow the Secretary of the Union permission to issue relief dockets to the most necessitous cases, as 1 am su e there mirt be c ; ghty-five per cent, of the people in very dire straits at the present time This situation is in itself complete condemnation of the Government’s lack of a < oal policy.
