COSTUME RECITAL

A Great Success Miss Adria Bush and her pupils last evening presented in the Town Hall a costume recital, the proceeds being devoted to the funds of the Grey Main School and the Dental Clinic. There was a *very large and highly appreciative audience and their warm and frequent applause was a striking tribute to the work of the performers and their teacher. The settings for the various items were effective and the costumes, designed and supplied by Madame Foley, Wellington, were very artistic. Miss Dorothy Thwaites and her pupils assisted and their perform-

ance of several ballets were quite in keeping with the general high standard of the entertainment. The programme was a well varied one and in all their items the children showed evidences of careful and systematic training. Their interpretations were at all times pleasing, and their enunciation was such that very few words were missed by the audience.

The star turns of the evening were undoubtedly the appearances of Miss Adria Bush, who in the first part of the programme, gave a costume recital, “Sydney Carton’s Farewell to Life,” from ”A Tale of Two Cities.” She gave a nicely restrained performance and held her hearers throughout. Later, Miss Bush appeared with Mr J. Stopforth (Hokitika) in a costume duologue, an excerpt from “Romeo and Juliet” (Shakespeare). Again she scored a great success, and Mr Stopforth also played his part well. Airs W. Cogswell rendered a solo for the dramatisation, “Little Boy Blue,” in her usual accomplished manner, while little Mavis MacDonald gave a very pleasing rendition of “The Geisha Girl,” a character song. At the conclusion of the recital numerous beautiful bouquets and boxes of chocolates were received by the performers, The programme was as follows:—
