FIRE WASTE

Stricter Scrutiny ON CAUSES OF OUTBREAKS. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, September 12. According to information supplied by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Mr de la Perrelle, good progress has been made with the campaign recently inaugurated to reduce :he Dominion fire waste. The Minister referred to a statement which, he said, would give the impression that, as ample powers were already available for holding inquests into incendiaristic fires, no action was to be taken on the lines of the Minister’s recent statement. The Minister said that this was not the case, but arrangements were being made for the Police Department to make more particular investigations into all fires, and any eases which presented abnormal features, or where there was any indication that the fire might be due to incendiarism, would be referred to the District Coroner with a request that he hold a public inquiry.
