ROSS NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) The Mayor, Mr J. Murdoch, lias forwarded the following letter to the President of the Progress League, Christchurch: “I have been requested by the organisers for an improved i mail and train service between Christ-. church and Ross on three days a week —that is, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—to ask for your co-opera- 1 tion at your end. We are doing our best here as you can see by the enclosed newspaper clipping. Westland is destined to become the playground of Canterbury, and, whilst many may come over here with the idea of only having a holiday, their eyes will be opened to the dormant possibilities of this neglected province. There is to i be opposition when the tenders are , called for the new mail contract. One contractor is prepared to put on a ; special car on arrival of the Christ- ; church train at Ross at 7.30, when re-! quired, to land passengers at Waiho (about midnight. This means that you j can leave Christchurch at 10 a.m. on ; Tuesday, and be on the Franz Josef Glacier at 10 a.m. Wednesday. We I prefer to see tourists more time, ■but this special car men who I are pressed for time.—Yours truly. I 'John Murdoch, Mayor, Ross; 10th I August. ’ ’

■ Mr Murdoch extended an invitation jto Mr Sterling and the members of i the Railway Board to visit Ross and 'to discuss railway matters here. The i Mayor received a telegram as follows: “Replying your telegram, greatly rej gret engagements necessitate leaving Greymouth for Christchurch this (Sati urday) morning, and will therefore not Ibe able to meet you Saturday night ,as you suggest. (Signed) H. H. Sterling.” j A large amount of data in connee- | tion with mining matters has been eol- ; lected by the Secretary of the Ross Prospecting Association, and will bo brought forward at the general meeting to be held in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock, to which the President extends a eorj dial welcome to all those interested. j Mr Jack Chalmers, probationer at the State School, who has been on sick . leave, has now resumed his duties.
