AUGUST 1ST. DEMONSTRATION AT CHRISTCHURCH.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—A great amount of publicity has been given to the August Ist. demonstration in Christchurch which resulted in a mix up between workers and police, and subsequent jailing of 'most of those arrested. According to reports, the City Council, which by the way is a Labour Council, refused permission to hold the demonstration, and it is alleged’wore responsible for the police interference. When it is considered that the demonstration was against war, the Council should be condemned for its action, and it is the duty of all working class organisations to send in resolutions of protest, and resolutions demanding the release of those workers arrested and jailed for taking part in the demonstration. I have it on good authority that the large crowd who watetied the occurence were absolutely in sympathy with the demonstration, and hooted the police when they butted in. I am, e'c., - JACK DOYLE. August 8. 1931.
