LEAGUE FOOTBALL

NOTES AND COMMENTS. ; i (By “Spectator.”) The senior match Possibles v. Pro- | babies, at Wingham Park to-morrow j should be a big draw card. Mr J. ■ i Saunders of Christchurch, wh o is South ■ Island selector, will be present at rhe ; ■match, and undoubtedly every player , will be giving of his best. > “Spectator” has witnessed many : Possible-Probable matches, anj they! , have usually pr< J.uced more than the 1 average of indieidualitm and. selfishness. but one feels . ure that a select v.i h the capabilities of Mr Saunders will havehis eye on the player that males an opening and gives his supj ports every opportunity and makes ;th j ■ gun e what it sa a oc, spectacular ! with snappy passing and combined efj forts from snirt to finish. I The teams have been evenly divided j and both sides should give a creditable ■ showing. . The Possibles back division, which I includes Dodds, supported by heavy for- ' wards, should hold their own with the j Probablesi’ rearguard, which includes Masters, who never fails to set his J backs in motion. i A number of forwards look to be cer cain of inclusion in the South Island 1 'cam, and it is the hope of supporters that at least two or three backs will also be included. The South Island Selector has already witnessed trial matches in the Canterbury and Otago Provinces. The South i Island team will be selected soon afI ter tomorrow’s itrial match. The South Island Representatives meet the North Island at Carlaw Park, Auckland, on August 15, a fortnight hence. The Pirate Juniors will make their first appearance at Wingham Park tomorrow, when .they will meet Runanga B. in a competition match. If the junior thirteen start off as well as their 1 senior team, they will make an auspici- ! ous debut in the code, at the same time : proving quite an excellent addition. 1 Woolston third grade and schoolboys ' teams will arrive by to-day‘s excursion j train from Christchurch, a nd will play i matches wi'h combined teams from the Marist and Runanga clubs. In all the lowef grades, good football has been witnessed this season and quite a. good game with the visitors should result. The newly formed Pirate Senior triumphed over Blackball at Wingham Park last Sunday making an impressive entry in'o the senior competition. They, : however, will have to play’ be’ter football to beat Marist or Runanga, as I Blackball last Sunday gave a very 1 poor showing. Pirates have a. majority ■of very enthusiastic players who in ; victory or defeat show a true sporting ' spirit and ‘he club should prosper. Pirate’s light pack of forwards may : be the team’s weakness against such I a. heavy forward combination as that , of Marist or Runanga.
