REEFTON, June 12. The Arbitration Court has chiefly been busied here in hearing the mining companies’ application for a new award, and the Union’s case as agai-ist the alteration sought. A decision will be later given. Air Justice Frazer, together with Messrs A. P. Monteith and W. Cecil Prime (assessors) and Air Gilmour (Registrar) left by car this morning via Nelson. Mr T. O. Bishop, Secretary to the Employers’ Federation, also left for Wellington this morning. Air Hughie Smith, the well-known Scottish poet, yesterday reached his eightieth year, and was the guest in the evening at a social function tendered by his friends at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law. Air and Airs Ralph Heslop. Air Smith, who was a well-known baker in the early days at Ahaura, came to Roefton subsequently and continued his business, also engaging i n farming. He is best known nowadays by his many poetical efforts, appearing from time to time in the “Grey River Argus, ” and always being read with the greatest interest by all who appreciate the auld Scot’s dialect when set to harmonious measures. Air Smith is still in. good health, and his many friends will trust to see

him still so when he has seen through anothe r decade. There will be several interesting football matches over the week-end.
