BLACKBALL NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr W. Meadowcroft (Mike) is at present on a visi,t to his parents. He intends returning to Wanganui on Tuesday.
The friends of Airs Jas. Shields, of Brodie Street, who has lately undergone a series of operations at the Grey Hospital, will be pleased to learn that ■she is now ’progressing favourably.
Much interest has been manifested locally in the correspondence anen,t the correct distance a quoiter should stand, when delivering his quoit, in the 15 yards match. This may sound like “telling tales out of school,” but 1 would just like to whisper to “Pin Heid” that I was fortunate in overhearing a discussion last Sunday afternoon, between Harry Lauder, Jock Mills and Will Fyfe, on this vexed question, and, although I must confess that, not being thoroughly conversant with quoiting terms, 1 was a bit at sea, still if “Pin Heid” could possibly get into touch with the three “wits” I have mentioned, I am positive the question would be finally settled. General regre,t was expressed in the township on Wednesday morning when it became known that Vida, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Cliff Turk, of Stafford Street, had died during the previous night. The little girl had been in indifferent health for a considerable time, and the end was not unexpected. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon at Karoro Cemetery, and despite the inclemency of the weather, was well attended. The sympathy of all the townspeople goes out to the parents in their sad bereavement.
The following amount have been received by the Miners’ Union Secretary, as donations to the Blackball Relief Fund and are herewith thankfully acknowledged:—Mr Jack Doyle. Nelson Creek 10s; Messrs Nancarrow and Co. (for Speight’s Breweries) cheque £5; We-tland Breweries, cheque for £2 2s.
As well as the above amounts the sum of £3O has' been handed over to the Committee by Air P. Rogers, Manager of the ATinstrel Troupe. Air Rogers stated that when all accounts wore squared and outstanding monies had coihe to hand, he considered he would be able to hand over somewhere in the vicinity of another £3O, making about £OO in all. This is a very creditable achievement and ample justification of the Minstrel Troupe’s tour. A balance sheet is being prepared, and it will be submitted to a general meeting at an early date. The Blackball League Club seniors meet Brunner on the local Domain on Sunday, and followers of League are assured of a good game. At the usual card party held in the Druids’ Hall last Alonday night, the lady’s prize was wonby Airs McGregor, while the gent’s prize was won by Air Jas. Park, South Belt. The players were complaining about the coldness of the hall. It is understood that in future such parties will be held in the ante-room, where a fire can be provided. The Caledonian. Society held another very successful ingleside on Friday week, when the night passed off enjoyably with the usual songs and old-time and modern dances. The ladies prepared the usual first-class hand-round tea. the home-made scones, etc., being thoroughly appreciated. Aliss Muriel Adamson, who underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital some time ago, has been discharged from the institution, and has returned to her home. All patrons of the dancing Quit, in and around the Greymouth district, are reminded of the forthcoming League Ball, which takes place on Friday, 3rd July, and bids fair to rival the Oddfellows’ ball in popularity. A waltzing competition will be hold, the prizes for which aggregate four guineas. All the waltzing experts are expected to enter for this competition. There will also be the usual novelty dances, including the lucky one-step. The arrangements are in the hands of the League Secretary. Mr L. Hunt, and his capable committee. All lovers of a good night’s enjoyment are requested to keep July 3rd marked in red ink, in their diary.
