In Puketahi Street
OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE.
An alarm of fire was given at about 5.45 o’clock yesterday morning, the outbreak being located in a six-room cd house, i n Puketahi Street, owned by Mr J. Tillyshort of Chapel Street, and occupied by Mr and Mrs C. Dudley and family. The alarm was given by Alias M. Anderson, i and the Brigade were quickly on the scene, but on their arrival, flames were leaping from tlhiei building and the Brigade did remarkably well to -a.ve the front bedroom, and one occupied by M r and Mrs Dudley and son. When Mr Dudley was awakened by the sound of what word probably falling pictures, the tail’s were licking under tho bedroom door. He horridly assisted his wife and son 'to escape through the bedroom window, and snatching a few personal belongings, made bis own ■exit. As it was, he suffered considerably from the effect,, oi siuqkc. The lire apparently started near the open fire place in the dining room, on the eastern side of the building, and iannby a strong north-easterly breeze, it. ■quickly spread to an unoccupied beduooon in the front of the house and shen to all tih® other parts of the building. Fortunately, Miss Ivy Dudley, daughter of the occupiers, who usually slept in the other bedroom, -was staying in Cobden for the night. The flames spread to Mr Mathie«oxi’s residence on the eastern aide, but no considerable damage was done, tbottgi'! after the Brigade had left a second outbreak was discovered there, but it was quickly extinguished. D is understood that the building was insured f°r £250 in the South British Office and the furniture for a similar sum in the State Office.
