A WASTER
■ Father’s Cruelty ' | TO FRAIL SON. (Per Press Association.') I GISBORNE, September G. " Comment ui ;i most scathing nature was passed by Air Harper, S.M., at the Police (’unit this morning- at the <-onI elusion of a case in which Frederick I Cade pleaded not guilty to a charge of an aggravated assault on his son, aged thirteen. “L am satisfied. ” said the Magistrate “that the accused committed a cowardly and aggravated assault on this frail boy. There is no excuse whatever for his behaviour, and 1 am satisfied that the offence which the bov was supposed to have committed was only trivial. It is evident that the boy, when in the witness box, was ( in great fear, ami told his story to protect himself from the fury of his father. The accused is not a man at all. He is nothing but an unmitigated waster, who refuses to work and lives on charitable aid and his wife’s earnings. L should like to sentence him to a sharp terms of imprisonment, where he would have to take his coat off and do some work. The only thing that saves him from that is that his wife is in the hospital, and his children would have no one to take care of them.” The accused was admitted to probation for six months, and an order was made for tin l children to be placed under 1 he supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for their own protection.
