TARANAKI PROTEST

Against Varsity Senate j ON TWO COUNTS. j An action in the Supreme Court at i Wellington is contemplated to test the [validity of the New Zealand UniverIsity Senate’s action in refusing to grant scholarships to students on the credit list “unless they are deemed worthy.” 'Phis point has arisen owing to the senate’s refusal to grant a scholarship to a Taranaki boy although he was mentioned in the Credit list. Protests have been made bv almost every local body in Taranaki, against the Senate’s activity in connection with the Opaku Education Endowment and the recommendation in the Committee’s report that the Opaku Reserve be resumed as a national ed’dowment for the benefit of the UniIversity in Northern New Zealand. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce has written to all poitical leaders and pointing out that this endowment and others concerned emphatically protesting against these proposals to alienate the endowment from Taranaki and pointing out that this . endowment was granted originally by Ihe then Government for the benefit of Taranaki scholars in recognition of the handicaps suffered by education in Taranaki when the province was engaged in fighting the Maori wars.
