Mrs Mclntyre of Westport, who has been visiting Greymouth and the South, returned last evening, and wen! on to Westport to-day. Master R. Phillips left by this morning’s train for Christchurch en rout*' to Wellington, where he has secured h cadetship in a Government Department. ♦

Airs and Miss Auld left this morn Uig for Christchurch on a short, visit. MBs J. Taafe, who has been visiting Reef ton in connection with the ,tennis tournament, left this morning for Grey mouth.

The tennis (players from Christ church who attended the tournament at Reef ton were taken to the Lyell yesterday in Father Ginisty’s and one of Mr Twomey’s ears, and were shown the earthquake damage in that district. Needless to say, they enjoyed the trip immensely, the day being gloriously line. The visitors left for Christchurch by this morning’s e» press. For some time past there have been rumours of thofts from gardens. In one ease a resident had the look of his whole paddock of late potaoes spoiled by raiders pulling up the stalks while looking for ripe tubers. Vestei day it was again reported that a pad dock of potatoes had boon •*bandicoot ed”—that it, all the large tube * taken away from the plant by han I. without its being dug up. These twa instances have occurred in the same neighbourhood, so that it is quite on the cards' that the culprit does not live far distant. Such thefts are undoubtedly of the meanest kind, and all right minded people vrill hope that the culprit will be exposed at. no future date.
