CHANNEL TUNNEL.
MILITARY AND OTHER OBJECTIONS. LONDON, February 12. Mr Ramsay MacDonald, who was Premier in 1924, when the last effort was made t 0 obtain Government sanction to the Channel Tunnel, has revealed, in an interview with the Daily Mail’s political representative thaf it was not only military considerations which the Committee of Imperial Defence then considered but als o a care fully nrepared economic memorandum, which influenced the Committee’s decision as much as the opinions of the military representative. Mr MacDonald explained that before calling the Defence Committee, he ask ed members of the Channel Tunnel Committee if they would continue to press for a tunnel if the military opposed. They said no, so the project was not pursued. It was Absolutely untrue to say that he accepted the military objections. He personally always favoured the tunnel, and was surprised to find the opposition so strong. He was prepared to participate in any reconsideration of the subject.
