NEW CRUISERS.
For British Navy. ARE OTHER POWERS RESPONSIBLE? CRoccived Feb 13 at 8.40 p.m.) LONDON, February 13. Commenting ojn the tan-thousand ton cruisers to bo built tor the Bri fish Navy, the Daliy Telegraph’s naval writer says: —TherL is good rea son to believe Britain would not buii<l any more of these costly warships but for the action of other Powers. Bri toin at present has built eleven of th>m, and Australia has built two. The with the two at present being laid down, will eventually have fifteen heavy cruisers, compared with America’s while Japan has eight and France and Italy have six each. He added that it wpS imtuobabL* that much progress wou be made, with the new ships before 'the end of the current financial year, and certainly they would not be ready for service until the spring or summer of 1932. These ships belonged to the 1928 programme. The correspondent adds that the navy estimates for 1929 provide for three moi*; cruisers—one of ten thousand tons, and two of 8400 tons.
