AMUSEMENTS.

OPERA HOUSE. MATINEE TO-DAY. Milton Sills is at his very best in the attraction at the Opera lioutij) at the matinee to-day and again to-night in a picture called “Hard-Boiled Haggerty” which Wid Gunning produced for First National Pictures. Powerful characterisation, human, and, above all, a warmly human romance, place “Hard-BoiJjd Haggerty” at the top of the list of Milton Sills’ stellar vehicles to date. Figuring prominently in the romance and drama of the picture is the newest and one, of the most promising oi young leading ladil./s, Molly O’Day. The plot was adapted by Carey "Wilson from Elliot White Springs’ magazine story, “Belated Evidence,” ano Charles Brabin directed the picture, which is billed as a Charles Brabin production. It is splendidly staged, has some beautiful, quaint and picturesque technical effects and excel-1 lent photography and lighting credited to Cameraman Sol Polito. Arthur Stone, Mitchell Lewis, George Fawcett, Yola d’Avril and Lucien Prival aiM among the principals of the supporting cast in effective characterisations.

BAND CONCERT AT RUNANGA. On Friday night next the Greymouth Band will present to its Runanga patrons the music t 0 be played at the Wanganui Contest this month. The Band is at present trained into great form., and the rendition of the Contest music will be a surprise to all. This music is of the very highest class, being the test music for the great Crystal Palace contest in England. The opening item will be the hymn test, “Nearer, My God, To Thee,” in which the Band rises to great heights. The test selection, “Lorenzo” and “The Moorside Suite,” are music of a class not previously heard in New Zealand, but most appealing, wi'h great variety of movement introduced, in which every member of the Band has to play a prominent part. Greymouth is fortunate in having a Band capable of playing such an epic test. The test march “Shumadinska” is a bright, snappy item, always interesting and full of go. The Band programme would be incomplete wi'hout a descriptive item, and “The Trip to Blackpool” is a “corker,” into which the Band brings a great deal of harmony and humour. The quartette party, consisting of Messrs IT. F. Vincent, M. Garth, B. Halls and J. Henderson, will render “Concordia,” a most charming piece. A duet by Messrs H. F. Vincent and A. Smith, entitled “The Titlarks.” is a genj, giving scope to these brilliai \ cornetists. The supporting items are of a high standard. Miss Bush, the well known elocutionist, will render an item. Mr J. Hadland, who is ever popular on the Runanga concert platform, will sing one of his latest songs. Other items will be announced later. With this programme, the Miners’ Hall should have a capacity house on Friday.
