HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Own correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 12. Th e bowling tourney has continued to attract a fair amount of interest. Iu the rinks competition the local sections were both won by Hokitika rinks, one of which went through the section play without a loss. The Mayor of Westport, Mr Harkness, is among the competitors. Mr H. L. Michel has been advised’ that it is likely Hon T. K. Sidey, Leader of the Upper House, will represent the Government at thc‘ Fire Bri-' gade Conference and Demonstration, opening on the 25th inst at Hokitika. The probability of the road formation between Ruatapu and Lake Mahinapua being shortly metalled will be welcomed by motorists, and it should render the Lake a popular holiday re sort. The Acclimatisation Society has ascertained that the boat landing and an approach thereto at Shanghai Point, on the shore of the Lake will not be very costly. It is suggested also that a track be formed up a hill near the point, t 0 give a good view of the whole sheet of water, at a point where boats can always rely on a good depth of water. At the Wes'land Hospital last month 80 patients wer e treated, there having been 25 male and 9 female inmates at the end of the previous month; admitted during January. 25 males, 21 females —46; discharged cured, 26 males, 15 females—4l; died, 4 males, 1 female—s; total discharged, 30 males, 16 females—46. remaining in hospital.. January 31st, 20 males, 14 females —34; in hospital for over two month, 9 males, 2 females—ll. Messrs McGregor and Houston have been appointed delegates to represent the Westland Trotting Club at tho conference at Greymouth on Friday next, relative to a circuit of racing dates for the next racing season. At a meeting of the Westland Racing Club Committee, it was reported that about £BOO had been paid out on account of the removal of the stand and its enlargement, together with furniture, fittings, etc. There was a liability remaining of about £250. An amount had also been paid off the debenture debt and advances totalling in all £940. and interest to the amount of £233 had been paid. The’ bank overdraft stood at about £3OO. The painting of the stand was in hand, and is progressing satisfactorily. The judge’s box had been moved further back, and raised still higher. Some minor works were required before the Easter meeting. The Internal Affairs Department approved a rebatp of £155 i 2s 6d on last meeting. The, New Zea land Racing Conference granted exemption to Part V., Rule 8, for. the Easter programme. Messrs Evans and McGregor were nominated for the Dis trict Committee, and Mr Evans ; 'for the Club’s representative at the Conference. Mr G. E. Cuvy is to. be* Stipendiary Steward for the tro'ting events at Easter, which the N.Z. Trotting Association has Mr Jas. O’Brien, M.P., wrote Iharikrag I the Club for invitation to Christmas meeting, and regret" ing circumstances prevented his attendance. Mr E.--W. Spencer. Reef ton. wrote thanking the Club for sympathy expressed •in the loss of the mare Piccanniny, which he valued very greatly. -Al r 11. C. Newman wrote accenting the position of Patrol Steward. The appointment of assrs H. Jones, R, Lynn, H. C. Newman. O. J. Thompson and J J. Mclii tosh junr as Patrol Stewaids was cojifirmed.

At the Hospital Board’s meeting last evening, Mr D ivirlso?: asked w. ’U had been done to cause the merry-gc-round man to pass some caustic r • marks about the Board’s finances. The Secretary sta'ed the m-in had left i roll of tickets to be sold by the Board on condition that he would give 'half the proceeds if the Board advertised same and sold the tickets. No one would undertake the sale of the ticke's on these conditions, and the tickets were returned. Accounts amounting t 0 £340 10s 3d were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported —Receipts £853 19s 3d, credit balance £799 6s lOd. The House Committee (per M r Davidson, Chairman) reported re the resignation of the wardsmaid. and recommended several requirements, repairs to Old Women’s Home, and that John Singer had been appointed wardsman at th e Old People’s Home.—Received and approved. Repairs to the Board rooms were authorised. Messrs Duff and Davidson were authorised to sign an agreement with Messrs Johnson and Woolhouse for meat supply for current year, also an agreement with four employees ai the hospital. Dr Valintine wrote ask ing to have alterations to the maternity hom e carried out. After discussion, it was moved by M r Duff and seconded by Mr Davidson that the matter be held over indefinitely as the Board do not consider this a permanent maternity home. Tho Chairman dissenting, the motion was car ried. Dr Valin 4 ine al-so asked the Board to advertise all applications for medical officers, etc, in city papers. Resolved that the Board resent this regulation, and take exception to it, and .refuse to comply therewith. Kumara Medical Fund forwarded a cheque for £75, voluntary contributions. Grey Hospital Board forwarded a cheque for £5O 7s, being this Board’s quota from Timber Workers’ Union for three months ended 31<st December, 1928. Nurse L. Benyon tendered her resignation. Dr Baird and the Secretary (Mr T. W. Bruce) were granted annual leave.
