At an inquest down South the other day it appeared that deceased (whose death was attributed to heart trouble) was a heavy smoker and long accustomed to consume an ounce of tobacco a day. His medical adviser considered this excessive, but thought the quality of the tobacco, in this case, was to blame as well. “You can’t,” he said, “go on smoking these imported tobaccos, almost all of them loaded with nicotine, without paying the penalty sooner or late.” The coroner said he couldn’t understand why people would insist in so many cases in smoking poisonous foreign tobaccos when we had here in New Zealand perhaps the purest brands of tobacco produced and so comparatively free from nicotine as to render them perfectly safe. Safe they certainly are, and the absence to a very considerable extent of nicotine in them is undoubtedly due to the toasting of |he leaf. This not only renders them practicalyy innocuous but develops their flavour and aroma as well. Popular brands are: Riverhead Gold (mild), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog). medium, Cavendish medium and Cut Plug No. 10 full.

In these modern times when almost everybody has a car, and those who haven’t one are going to get one, it is not surprising that there should be a quest for a better means of keeping up the appearance of the vehicles. The old method of applying paint and varnish has caused dissatisfaction with many, from the owners of the lordly Rolls-Royce type to the humble and serviceable Ford. In consequence of I this, various experiments have been made to find a better way, and as a result the wonderful Duco process has been evolved- Duco was not on the market long before its value was appreciated, and in the cities it gave a fatal knock-out to the old system of the brush. For full particulars of this wonderful new method of painting and varnishing consult the Dispatch FounIry, Greymouth.— Advt.
W. D. Munro (.Mr W. J. Joyce; proceeded against William Green oj u judgment summons at the Magis irate's Court yesterday, claiming tile sum of £4 Is t>d. Defendant states that he was married, and had two children. He was now earning £5 a week. In 1927 he walked off a farm with £25 ,having lost £250 on it. Me bad distributed what he had among his creditors, and Munru aad got 30/-. He had done his best and had asked all hia creditors to accept 30/- a month. Munro, was thh only one who refused to accept his offer. Mr Joyce intimated that his client was pre pared to accept small payments. De fendant remarked that the trouble was that that they would all want tlu same. In reply to : the Magistrate, defendant said his total debts amounted to £2OO. He paid 35/- a week rent, and had two boarders paying 27/6 each, but they were only temporary. He had altogether twelM. creditors, and couldn’t pay even 5/a month to Munro at present. He was paying £1 a month for furniture, cm which he owed £25. Mr Joyce pointed out that plaintiff was only a working blacksmith. The Magistrate b marked that if defendant expected the 30/- a month to be divided be tween his creditors, Munro’s claim would run on for ten or eleven years. An order was made in fuD or at tho rate of nqt less than 5/- per month. thL* first payment to be made on or before March 12.
Now that we are already well into the New Year, we wonder how many of those good resolutions, which religiously we make every year, have already been broken. Those promises, eye, which we make, but in our hearts know that they will of a certainty be broken, the length of time they will remain unshattered being dependent solely on our own will power. But amongst all these resolutions there is one that, assiduously, we maintain unbroken—to drink, throughout the year, only the one brand of spirit—Dewar’s Imperial Whisky. Griffen and Smith ar-e the West Coast agents, and Dewar’s Imperial may also be obtained from the firm’s branch at Westport.— Advt.
In all cases prevention is oetter than cure. That is why it is that people now keep a bottle of Parkinson’s Influenza Specific in readiness in case the ’flu should again assert itself. Have you a bottle ready! The influenza always gives a short warning by a feeling of depression, aching bones, headache, sometimes accompanied with fever and sore throat. On the first symptoms take a teaspoonful of dose of the Specific in a wineglass of water and repeat every two or three hours till normal conditions are resumed. It is wonderful stuff, and acts straight away, and if taken in time a few doses will effect a cure. It is sold by Parkinson and Co. in bottles at 1/6 (eight doses) and 2/6 (16 doses), and full directions for use are plainly printed on the label of each bottle. Remember to be forewarned is to bo forearmed, and it is better to be sure than sorry.—Advt,
