LUGANO CONFERENCE.
REPARATIONS AND EVACUATION DISCUSSED BY CHAMBERLAIN AND STRESEMANN. (Received December 11 at 10.5 p.m."> LONDON, December 11. A message from Lugano states that Sir Austen Chamberlain and Herr Stresemann’s conversation lasted two hours, and included the problems of reparations, and evacuation of the Rhineland, Sir Austen Chamberlain de•veloping his theory regarding the interpretation of Article 431 of the Versailles Treaty. He expressed the hope that it would be possible td arrange with the other powers for an earlier evacuation.
The conversation will be continued to-day.
Signor Grandi. Italian Under-Secre-tary of Foreign Affairs, also interviewed Sir Austen Chamberlain and M. Briand, and later left for Angora to negotiate the Turco-Italian arbitration treaty.
Well-informed observers at Lugano believe that Britain may propose a meeting preliminary to the Disarmament Commission of the League, early in February, but will probably adjourn until June, giving an opportunity to consult the United States after" Mr Hoover takes office in March.
