OBITUARY.

SAMUEL GROOM. The death occurred last evening about 6 o’clock of a well-known and highly-respected citizen of Greymouth in the person of Mr Samuel Groom. For more than twelve months past, his health had been failing. and about three months ago he entered the Grey River Hospital, where, despite every' effort, his strength declined, and the end came nowise unexpectedly. A native of West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, deceased, who was 53 years of age, came with his parents to New Zealand when twelve years old. and in 1906 with his brothers, Robert and Thomas, he inaugurated the wellknown butchery business in Tainui Street with which he had been ever since associated. A keen business man, he also interested himself in dis trict development, having been a Director of Brunner Collieries Ltd., taking the leading l\art among the West Coast shareholders in the re-opening of the Wallsend mine. He was also a substantial shareholder in the Tees Shipping Coy. AH forms of sport appealed to the deceased, who was a veteran member of the Grey Boxing Association, while he last year held the office of President of the Greymouth Old Boys’ Association. He also took a leading part in the Masonic brotherhood, having at last year's Convocation of the N.Z. Grand Lodge been elevated to the office of Grand Steward, whilst he was a Past Master of Lodge Ruuauga, and a member of Rose Croix Lodge, Greymonth, E.C- of Lodge Mawhera, of the Mark Lodge, E.C? and the Royal Arch, E.C. Some four years ago Ur Groom paid a visit t> England, Scotland and Frame in company with Mr .Tas. Sharp. lie was unmarried, and is survived by his par cuts, Mr and Mrs S. Groom, of Paroa; by three brothers. Robert and Thomas (of Greymouth), and George (of Ru nanga),’and by two sisters, Mrs Alfred Gilbert (Paroa) and Mrs William Wick (Runanga). To them the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended in * b( ’’ r bereavement.. The funeral takes place at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow, being preceded by a Masonic, service at 1.30 p.m. at the Lodgeroom,| .Tainui Street. .
