BOXING.
NOVICE TOURNAMENT. Brilliant Displays. BY NOVICE BOXERS. GIVEN BY CONTESTANTS. When Bro. Tarcisius originated the idea of staging a novice boxing tournament among boys from four stone in weight upwards, the proceeds, if any, to go towards assisting the general school fund, ho did it with the strong belief that it would prove a success. Many well-known local boxing supporters were not optimistic regarding the success of the venture, but Brol Tarcisius was keen, and knew the material was available among the lads. Receiving the practical assistance of the Greymouth Boxing Association, and the support of a small band of willing workers. Bro. Tarcisius left no stoneunturned to make certain the public would be given an entertainment well deserving of their patronage.
Everyone attending last Thursday or Saturday night’s tournament, or both, will readily agree that the entertain ment. provided by the lads competing was well worth the price of admission paid, and more. The outstanding feature of the tournament was the keen interest which the lads displayed, and the splendid physical condition in which they entered the ring. The knowledge of scientific boxing displayed by the contestants must have astounded the public, and one wellknown follower of boxing was heard to remark that he had paid his 15/- to see professional fights which had not been nearly as interesting as those witnessed at the Town Hall last week-
Saturday night’s programme was excellent, and the large number of spectators present showed that they appreciated and enjoyed the efforts of the lads in no uncertain manner. A total of twenty bouts were staged, and each was productive of a good performance. The Greymouth Boxing Association officials worked assiduously, and it ; - due to their splendid handling of the big programmes that the arrangements were carried out with such marked success.
Prior to the exhibition bout given by the Croft brothers, Mr A. Beban thanked the public for their generous attendance, and stated that another tournament would most likely be held in the near future. It had been a pleasant surprise to the Boxing Association and to the public There was an abundance of promising mater ial among the lads they had seen competing, and perhaps a futitre Gene Tunney, a Jack Dempsey or a Toni Heeney was hidden among them.
