Matt r vital importance coal mining industry Dqmiiuon. Advise strong protest unless made in Dominion.” The following was the reply from Mr Holland: —

“Premier denies contract has been entered into for smokcl ss fuel. 1 am endeavouring to o *eertain whether there are any negotiations in that direction. ’ ’ The< local press points out that if there is a nec .ssity for smokeless fuel, the commodity can be manufactured. in the Dominion, and of a su-

per io? quality. It may be noticed from M? Holland’s reply that Air Coatjca d- nies that any contract has been entered into fc-r the supply of smokeless fuel; and* so did the iu”i

company’s solicitor, who happens co be in Wellington just now. At the present juncture it would bi a dangerous admission to make. Especially would this b i so in the Buller, where a candidate is tojuriug the constituency, in the Reform interest. Could it be that votes wou.d be recorded for a candidate whose Party Lelader contemplated such a blow tu the mining industry? As pointed out by a contemporary 200 miners had lately been, idled at Blackball, and Millerton has becoi up against it for a considerable time. This sort 'of thing ought to rouse every min -r to protest and use every constitutional method to prevent what would still further reduce their chances of it livelihood.
