WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, November 1. Mr Shaw, of the City Hotel, Airs Hansby (of the Sergeant’s Hill Hotel), and Mr a Ryan (cf the “De Luxe’’ Cigar Divan) ar- leaving Christchurch on Sunday. “Buster” Shaw is chaffeur. The meeting of the Businessmen’s Association, called for Tuesday night, lapsed for want of a quorum. It was decided to call another meeting for next Tuesday, November Gth. It is stated that the Borough Gen ci al Purposes Committee met last night tor the purpose ‘of drawing up conditions for a re-arrangement of the electrical staff. Bv later reports, it appears that the proposal of the Government to purchase 100,000 tons of fuel for the railways annually from the Sensible Heat Company leaked out prematurely. It is Up to the whole 'of the coal producing districts to make imm.diate enquiries about this proposal and “sprag” it before it has time to mature.

Since penning the above, it has transpired that the Progress League has wired the Member for the District, Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., asking him *a enquire into the affair. Unless the Government are courting disaster, it would be suicidal t‘o attempt such a matter just now, when its position is «o “ahaEy.” The information, if thure is anything in it, must, like these things sometimes do, have been made public inadvertantly, from overseas, like the printing of those ballot papers with the three issues we hav-J heard about lately. It is significant that the first news of this proposal to substitute imported for New Zealand fuel on the Dominion railways should have eotme, not from the Government nr this Department, but from London. A pretty wedding was sob mnised in St Canice’s Church by tho Bev. Father Phelan, that of Mary Margaret, eldest daughter of' Mrs Dowd, Westport, and William, only- son 'of Mr and Mrs Watson, Waimangaroa. The bride who was given away by her brother Michael, looked charming' in an ivory crepej-de-chine dress, daintily trimmed with lace, with flowing veil and silver shores and stockings to match, and carried a dainty bouquet of roses and ; maiden hair fern. The bridesmaid, Miss Iris Watson, sister of the bridegroom, looked charming in a frock of apricot georgette, with hat to match, and bouquet to tone. Mr James Dowd attended as best man. Numerous gueshs were entertained at a wedding breakfast, at the- residence of Mrs Dowd mother 'of tho bride.

The foLowing applications were dealt, with at a sitting of the Wat' den’s Court before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M.:—Coal Oil (N.Z.) Ltd. coal prospecting license, Ngakawau.—Adjourned to November 28th. Arthur WiiLain Henley, application tor coal lease, 286 acres.—Adjourned to November 28th. At present the Westport bar is butter than for many a day. There is a depth of 25 fet 6 inches. If this i.*’ maintained, there should be no further complaint from overseas steamers on the bar. Mr and. Mrs H. Lov'ell left for Christchurch by early car to-day. Mr H. A. Jarden, of Christchurch, has been appointed handicapper to th/ Westport Trotting Club. Mrs May man and Mrs G. Head left by early car for Christchurch t'o-clay. Mr Snow is visiting Christchurch. Mr W. Craddock is leaving for Christchurch to-inorrow.

Mrs Hicks is visiting Greymouth. At the Magistrate’s Court Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presiding, licensing case came up in which tho police evidence was that Sergeant McGlone and a constable visited a certain licensed house on Sunday October 7th, and found 12 mon in tho bar. Same were boarders, but the remainder had their nam;>s called in Court to-day for being on licensed premises after hours. Constable Gurgenor said he in company with Sergeant McGlone, visited the hotel i?* question and found the defendants in th.j bar. They had no excuses to offer. One, with a previous conviction, was fined £1 and the others wore convicted and ordered to pay costs. Subsequently the licenste was charg d with selling liquor after hours. Tho, Sergeant, said that there were 12 men in tht bar, 3 being boarders and the others had no excuses. There wer ■ two previous convictions. Mr Lovell said that the licensee had held a license for four and a “half years and this was only his third, conviction. The Magistrate said it was the* third conviction and it was nn open case ctf selling after hours. He ha.d not heeded the two previous convictions. He was fined £lO and costs. A man was charged with cruelty to a heifer. The sergeant said def ndant stuck a three-pronged fork in the animal’s skin. The heifer bellowed and tore down the road and collapsed. The prongs w nt about five inches. Mr Wilson, for the defendant, said that h'e did not intend to> stick the forx into the heifer. He meant to hit it with the back *of the fork but it slipped and, entered thei calf. Th? animal turn d and the fork entered deeper. The animal was now quite well. He was fined £2 and costs. A fine of 5s

and costs was imposed on a defendant for cutting an intersection on a- motor cycle. For letting off small bombs in Palmerstc-in Street, a defendant was fined 10s and costs.
