MAIL BOX BURNT.
SUSPICIONS AROUSED. MONEY MISSING. WHANGAREI, August 24. Arising out of the destruction by fire (Involving- a mail box) of Lho Kahre Bridge store qm May 30th. last, av. enquiry was conducted by Magistrate Luxford (as coroner) at Kae->, on Wednesday. The Postmaster at Kaeo testified that the mhil contractor left there ou May 19, with four bags for delivery ut llahoe Bridge, containing amongst other mattier £BO in notes, £9/9/10 worth of stamps, and £125 in cheques on the Whangaroa Dairy Goy. Other witnesses stated that after th«> fire, there ulas no sign among the debris of the iron rings attached to the bags, and no remains of the bags, mail or other indications of their destruction by fire. Several persons were called upon «-o give an account of their movements ai the time of the fire, hut nothing ivas conclusive enough to warrant proceed ings. The Coroner, commenting, said: “J find that the Kiahoo Bridge Store mail box was destroy de by fire early in th e morning, of May 20. The fire was caused by the deliberate act of some person, or persons, unknown, who first removed the mail bags left by the carrier. The evidence is in* conclusive to prove the identity of the guilty persons, but I am not at all satisfied with thc evidence of j-’ rank Sales, Simon FlemiPg, and James Fleming. ’ ’ PAPER BURNT OUT. DUNEmN, August 24. The “County Press” newspaper office at Arrowtcwn, was destroyed by fir e last night. GISBORNE FIRE. GISBORNE, August 24. Mr and Mrs L. Wylie escaped from their house, Cobden Street, in night attire, when the building was dis covered in~Hames early this morning. Nothing was saved.
