“SHACKS” AT RAPAHOE.

RUNANGA COUNCIL’S PROFIT. ENDORSEE BY GREY BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council last evening, a letter was icweived from the Runanga Council soliciting support in the latter’s protest against “the slipshod method which is being allowed in the laying out of the Rapahoe township.” It was pointed out that one person who had Eased two sections, intended building about ten shacks, “the size and shape of which would not trouble him so long as lie got a fair return, and then it would not be long before whole families were squatted in the shacks — in places only suitable for on-? person.” The Council had prote-ted some time ago against a. township being laid out at Rapahoe, being of the opinion that it should be kept as a. scenic reserve. However, no h.'ed had been taken of the Council’s pro lest, it being pointed out that Rapahoe would be used more for summer resid- nces. “It was uji to the heads of tho Departments to see that the sec tions were not given to other than there who intended bet,l ering the place.’’ Tho Council was rrques'ed to give tho matter earnest consideration with a view to putting Rauahoe township on a proper footing. Cr Perotti remarked that ,thc shacks were probaldy for sing'e men. Th 1 * Alayor (Air J. W. Greenslade) said tliat they should certainly take an interest in an adjacent township. 'Flic residents of Runanga had recently gone to a lot of trouble to beautify the reserve, and to impose it so that i‘ would off'T better facilities foi swimming and recreation generally lie thought it was a matter deserving of their support. He moved that the Council endorse the protest made by the Runanga Borough Council, and back it up in any measuiv .taken by it to remedy the matter; and also that the Government be requested to sec that conditions were’ imposed whiel would not tend to make th-' place ai eyesore.

Cr Kent, in seconding the motion said that the population of Runangi was over 1000, so that it came withii the Town Planning Act, whereby i could adopt a, planning scheme iu con junction with tho County Council. 1 the matter was look'd into, .the,’' would find tha‘ they con’d proven anything like that which was beins complained of. The motion was agreed to.
