HOKITIKA SPORTS
Yesterday’s Results WESTPORT MEN WIN. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, April 11. | The Hokitika Athletic and Cycling Club were unfortunate in the fact that rain should have fallen heavily and continuously for many hours prior to the start of their Easter meeting today on Cass Square, because, it interfered with the attendance, ■which, considering the good programme, would under fine weather conditions have been far larger than it was. However, 1 there was a goodly number present, aird they were treated to some very interesting contests in the foot racing, cycling, Fire Brigade, whippet and jumping contests. Special praise is due to Mr G. A. Adamson (Secretary) A. Rowe (Assistant Secretary) aiid the other officials for the success of the sports. The other officials were as follow:—Referee, Mr IT. M. Coulson; Judges: Messrs R. Whiley, M. Houston and J. Hewer; Timekeepers: Messrs M. Coulson, G. Adamson and F. McGregor; Stewards: Running, Messrs W. Steel, H. Steel. L. Spencer and J J Williams; Messrs E. C. Toohey, P. Ross, F. Roehfort, F. Ballinger, C. Morrison, S. Moore and R. Lynn; Chopping, Messrs J. Turner, J. Davern, R. Ferguson, C. Wildbore, J. Phillips, E. Randall; Field Events, Messrs J. Conning, M. McManaway, J. Coulson. D. Williamson and K. Wallace;. Starters, Mr J. Williams (Running), Mr R. Lynn (Cycling) and Mr J. Billcliffe; Treasurer, Mr F. Roehfort.
One of the most successful competitors was the Westport sprinter, Deere, who won both the Hokitika 120 yards handicap and the 220 yards handicap, he being the scratch man of the day in this section, and proving himself quite as good as his reputation. Another Westport man ,R. Atkinson, the cyclist had also a day out, winning the Westland wheel race (2 miles) and the throe mile and one mile cycle handicaps, and running second in the half-mile cycle handicap. R. Fluety won his heat and the final of the Upright Chop (12 inch log), and is an imroving axeman, in view of his recent win at Kokiri. The Underhand Chop saw J. Brown, who at Moand recently got third in a heat, but did far better to-day on the rod pine. F. Sadler, the Grey rider, won the half-mile cycle event in good style, and is improving. Cobden Fire Brigade team put up a good showing in the two men coupling event, doing 38 see. but a penalty of 3 sec gave first place to a Hokitika pair, who went 41 see. without a penalty. Pierson won both jumping (>vents. The whippet 120 yards hurdles was not completed, but Linda Loo won a sweepstake. Following are the results:—
