GOLF.

ANNUAL MEETING OF GREY CLUB Mr Allan Smith (Club Captain) presided over a large attendance of membtfrs at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Golf Club. Tho annual report was as follows: — The Committee congratulates members on what was, on the whole, a successful season. The links have been kept in good order, and the greens compare very favourably with others in New Zealand. The weather conditions, on the whole, were very good, and very few matches had to bo postponed. A gratifying feature of the matches during the year was the number of hole play matches,, as these matches constitute excellent training for championship events. The Ladies’ Championship was won by Mrs Hannan, whose golf has always been consistent. The runner-up, Mrs P. J. McCarthy, who was probably the most improved player in the club, just missed being champion by a narrow margin. Since the season terminated, Mrs McCarthy has left Greymouth.

The Men’s Championship resolved itself into a struggle between the two top players, Messrs W. P. McCarthy and W. Meldrum, and in the final McCarthy gained the honour.

The West Coast tournament was held at Hokitika at the end of August, 1927, and was successful, the weather conditions being all that could be desired. Greymouth was represented in the finals of the Ladies’ and Men’s Championships by Mrs Hannan and Mr McCarthy respectively, who were each defeated by an extremely narrow margin. In the ordinary course of events this year’s championships would be held at Westport, but your Committee has received notification from that club that it will be unable to hold the championships there, so it has been decided that they be held at Greymouth.

Dalgleish Shield.—This Shield was competed for at the annual tournament held in Hokitika, when it was won by the Greymouth Club. Westport entered a challenge and the match was played on October 11 at Grey mouth, when Westport was successful in obtaining the Shield. Inter-club Matches. — During the year a very fine cup was donated by Mr and Mrs Seddon for competition between the Hokitika and Greymouth clubs. The first match for the cup was played on June 3, when Hokitika won by one game. The thanks of both clubs are due to the donors for their action. This match has always been looked forward to, and the winning of the cup makes a very successful termination to a plasant day’s match.

The ladies’ branch has been very helpful during tho year, and has helped to put the club in a very sound condition, so far as its finance is concerned. It is understood that the ladies’ branch has also experienced a very satisfactory year.

Easter Tournament. Last year an Easter Tournament was instituted by the Greymouth Club, proving entirely successful. It has been decided that this tournament be held again at the Greymouth links at Easter time. It is hoped that this tournament will become an annual event.

During the summer months the greens have been cut and the links now stand in fairly good order. The committee has a certain amount of improvement to make to the links, and it is hoped when these improvements are completed, that conditions will be greatly improved. A certain amount of rearrangement will have to be made regarding days for match play.

The balance sheet submitted will again be found satisfactory, and the financial position of tho club is secure and sound.

The thanks of the club are due to Mr A. Fairhall and his staff, and also to the trustee of the Greymouth Jockey Club; to the Greymouth Star and the Greymouth Argus, for their kindness in recording the activities of the club, and the results of the matches; to the donors of trophies during the year, and to the ladies for their assistance in providing afternoon tea. The outgoing committee wish members a pleasant season of golf, and trust that every assistance will be given the now committee in their efforts on behalf of the club-

The report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The following officials of the club were elected for the present year:— President, Mr W. Meldrum; Captain, Mr A. Smith; Secretary, Mr H. A. Wild; Treasurer, Mr F. W. Shallcrass; Auditor, Mr S. F. White; Committee: Messrs Revell, Cairney, Mclntosh, McKay, and Garde.
