REEFTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, March 27. Th e total rainfall for the week-end here amounted to the small total of one inch. Thc showers were very refreshing, but the ground could do with a lot more rain yet, although a good defal fell yesterday. The pumping of water into the reservoirs is at present at a standstill. The reservoirs, however, are now both nearly half full, but with the! water supply for Reefton to meet and only one small stream running, water will be a scarcity once more if pumping is not resumed or if water is not brought into the reservoirs in some way or other. Th e water has been left on in the evenings of late. The Rcadall Coal Mine resumed operations on Monday, after a lengthy spell of over five months, through lack of orders. They now have orders to keep them going for the next 12 months. This is good nows.

Mr "W. (Young) Davey, thc amateur boxer, who lost to Hawes at Westport on Saturday night last (though, the decision was considered generally to be unfair), returned to Christchurch by this morning's express. Young Davey wishes to hav4 a return match with Hawes and, perhaps, this time will not take things so easy. Messrs A. McTinnus and L. Dunford left for Christchurch this morning, en route for Sydney, on an extended holiday. Mr H. Cook, accompanied by Mrs Cook and family, left by this morning’s express en route for Wellington, where they will in future reside.

Mrs J. Horne, accompanied by her daughter, Miss R. Horne, left thism orning for Christchurch, after spending a few days in Recfton as thd guest of the former’s sister, Mrs J. Osbourne. Mrs Costello, of Wellington, and Mrs N. Doogan, of Greymouth, are on a visit to their mother, Mrs F. Hussey, of the Railway Hotel. Miss Downey, one of the victims of th<| Wellington drowning tragedy at Titahi Bay on Sunday, was a niece of Mrs F. Keating and Mrs T. Downey of Reefton, being well-known and respected in this district. She at one time resided at Inangahua Junction. At cricket on Sunday, in a scratch C. Tattley made 117 runs, hitting 19 fours and two sixers. This is the first time for a considerable period that a century has been reached in Reefton. The nearest scorers are: C. llqndry (caught out) 86, and J. Rimmer (1.b.w.) S 3. The Chevrolet Economy Contest conI eluded throughout New Zealand has furnished unquestionable proof of this car’s amazingly economical performaneqs. The local winner for this district proved to be Mr S. Knight, of Cronadun, with an average of 35jmiles per gallon. A tenia match commenced on Saturday between teams chosen by Mrs Instone (Black) and Miss King (Red), but it was stopped by rain when only half the games were played, otherwise a very close contest would have been witnessed. Th e ladies provided a very nice afternoon tea and Mr Pascoe returned thanks on behalf of the Chib and three hear.ty cheers were given for the ladies. During afternoon tea interval it was amply demonsitrated that a new pavilion is an urgent necessity and every effort should be made to have this erected next season. The following are the scores of the completed matches, Black team being mentioned first:—Combined Doubles: Pascoe and Miss Stallard 7 v. Liddicoat and Miss Cairns 5; Graham and Mrs Duff 7 v.
