BRITISH LEGION
Vacant Presidency OFFERED TO EARL JELLICOE. NEWSPAPER’S STRONG OBJECTION. LONDON, February 8. The British Legion has invited Earl Jellicoe to succeed Earl Haig in the Presidency. LATER. The Daily Express, editorially, expresses the hope that Earl Jellicoe will show wisdom ami decline the offer of the Legion, which is almost wholly composed of ex-army men. Further, the Legion, above all, should stand apart .from the sphere of controversy, hail Jellicoe’s war record, lightly o r wrongly, has been the subject of a fiercer controversy than ever centr-'d around a British Admiral. The Legion particularly needs a man of personality. It appeals to, and can move a great mass of fellow-countrymen. Despite his services, Earl Jellicoe is not a household figure, ami he does not touch the heart and imagination of the people, nor is he of an age when fresh burdensome duties can be successfully essayed. The one man adequately fitted to succeed Earl Haig is the Prince of Wales.
