HOKITIKA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 9. Air. T. T. Hugo, Inspector of Fire Brigades, for New Zealand, will be visiting Hokitika to inspect the local fire brigade at No 1. station, Hamilton Street, to-morrow (Friday), at b u.m. A. fire was started yesterday forenoon in the Arahura River bed, and spread upstream, at one time endangering Malfroy’s bridge. Fortunately the- fire was observed in good time and the settlers were able to allay immediate danger till help camo from the sawmill hands, and the position was made secure. In connection with Ihe .Jubilee Celebrations at Greyniouth and in regard to the novelty events on Tuesday, February 28, entries for all classes close on Saturday the 18th. inst. Particulars can be obtained at Town Clerk’s Office Hokitika. 'Pho proprietor of the merry-go-round at present operating on Cass Square are kindly donating a share of tonight’s takings to the funds of the Hokitika Band. The band will attend at the Square and render a programme in connection with same. A large accomodation house is in course of erection at Weheka, adjacent to the Fox Glacier track. The extended stage of the road beyond the Waiho is now in regular use. With facilities for accommodation at Weheka, the volume of traffic in that locality will increase greatly. The road connecting Waiho and Weheka traverses some high country which affords magnificent views of the forest and mountain range. The best out look obtainable is on the South trip, accirding to some travellers. Mr. 11. Stapley left this morning (ui a visit to Christchurch. Mr. M. Hay of the firm of Hallestein Bros (Hasting) is at- present on a holiday visit to Hokitika. Miss Ethel Harvey was a passenger for Christchurch by this morning’s express. Miss Jean Walker left by the express cn route to New Plymouth on annual holidays. Mrs. B. Elliott oT-Christchurch, is at present on a visit to her relatives at Hokitika.
