BENZINE TANK EXPLODES.
Launch in Flames. JUMP JN FROZEN. RIVER. BERLIN, January 12. One of the great motor launches, used to convey Hamburg’s dock labourers to work, caught fire on the Elbe, with the result that an explosion occurred of a benine tank. Ninety men were aboard the vessel, which was half way across the river, when flame shot from the motor. In a moment the boat was from stem to stern wrapped in flames. A panic ensued, and many men, whose clothes were afire, jumped into the icy water, on which ice was floatnearby, and quickly rescued thirty-six ing. Portunately, many boats were men who were taken to hospital in a serious condition through burns. Two were drowned. The accident was due to workmen transgressing the order forbidding smoking.
