HOKITIKA NOTES.

(By Our Own Correspondent.)

HOKITIKA, November 29.

Mr L. W. Louisson has received advice of his transfer on promotion to Greymouth, as Clerk of the Court. lie expects to take up his new duties before Christmas.

Commissioner .lames Hay, of the Salvation Army, will arrive in Hokitika on December 9th. He will bo accorded a civic reception in St Andrew’s Hall. The Commissioner will address the assemblage work on Army work in many lands.

Captain and Mrs Rankin, in charge of the local branch of the Salvation Army, are leaving the district on transfer to Oxford, Canterbury. Their place will be filled by Captain and Mrs Barnes, late of the Oxford Corps.

The weather has taken a decided change for the better. It is now warm, and altogether more in keeping with the time of the year.

This morning five car loads of altar boys from St Patrick’s Church, Greymouth and Runanga, arrived in Hokitika at 10.30 o’clock, and left later for Lake Kanieri, where they spent the day picnicking. Steady progress is being made with Dorothy Falls Road at Lake Kanieri. About a mile or more has been cleared of bush, a considerable distance formed, and a short length gravelled. When the gravelling has been completed between the end of the present road and Tahua track, there will be an open space to park cars and ample room for picnic parties in the reserves of bush. Further along the road is heavy bush which contains fine trees, and Hans Bay, which has been neglected as a resort, will come into greater use as road access is improved. For picnic outings, Lake Kanieri continues to be a very popular resort, and more week-end camping places are being erected by town residents. Advice lias been received that the dates chosen for the West Coast Tennis Tournament have been approved by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. The tournament will lie hold on the Hokitika and All Saints Courts on 25th, 26th and 27th January, 1928. Programmes will be printed and circulated as soon as the approved programme is returned by the Association. A moderate gathering attended the Hospital Board meeting on Monday evening to discuss arrangements for Hospital Day. Mr W. Jeffries was voted to the chair, and after discussion it was decided to enlist the sympathies of the people of Westland in their hospital by making a personal appeal by circular prior to Hospital Day, and a street appeal in th* town on that day. All employers of labour, Government offices, business firms, banks, schools, and churches throughout Westland will be approached by the method indicated, thus endeavouring to make the appeal popular, and inducing the residents to become interested in their own institution. The various local organisations will be requisitioned, viz., the Municipal Band, Spo./ting Clubs, Dramatic Club, etc, so a- to make th? people feel that no one will be left out, thus making the appeal to every man, woman and child in Westland. Mrs Paterson and Miss Halliday wore appointed Joint Secretaries. Already there has been promised £75. All contributions will be publicly acknowledged through tiic Press. Apologies were received from Revs Perkins and Knowl's-Smith, Messrs Breeze, Meharry and Spiers, who i all intimated their desire to assist in such a worthy cause.
