PAPUAN MURDERS.

SENTENCES COMAIUTED. RABAUL, November 24. In collection with the Nakamai massacre, twice within th.' past month all preparations were, made, and the sentenced natives were informed they wtro to be hung in the morning. The last occasion was yesterday. To-day the Administrator announced the commutation of the sentence to 15 years’ imprisonment. Grave concern was caused by the attempt of the Administration to ignore the Chief Judge, who clearly stated that he recommended mercy on stated grounds, and assured the Counsel for the Defence, that the death sentence would be ignored.

The action of the Administration is regarded as remarkable.
