HOKITIKA NOTES.

HOKITIKA, November 27.

Replying to a request for the filming of the Haast Pass by the Government Publicity Office, the Minister in charge has informed Air T. E. Y. Sodden, M.P., that it cannot be undertaken this summer, as the camera men are fully occupied elsewhere. On Friday evening, at the residence of Air and Airs Bergamini, Aliss Afuriel King, who has severed her connection with Baty’s garage, was tendered a social by members of 7 the staff. During the evening the manager. Mr Harrington, in a few well-chosen words, expressed regret at losing tho services of Aliss’King, who has been on the staff since the opening of the Hokitika branch, and ‘wished her every success in her future undertaking. Miss King was then called on to accept a handsome suitcase, on behalf, suitably inscribed, from the members of the staff, as a token of esteem in which she was held, her health being drunk with musical honours. Aliss King suitably responded. At the last meeting of the Borough Council, tenders were received for painting the pavilion and seats on Cass Square as follows® Haussmann and Co £26 10s, C. W. Fowler £3O, G. Howe £3B 16s, Scott and Co £43 12s Sd, T. Kerr £46 10s, T. A. Lynch £4B 12s 6d. The tender of Haussmann and Co was accepted, this being the lowest. On Friday evening, at the local bowlling green, Messrs C. J. King and W. Braddon (holders), in the contest for the crosses, tied with Alessrs Stuart and Stevenson, 21 points each, on the 21st head. The Secretary of the Municipal Band, in a letter to the Borough Council, stated that it had been suggested that the Band should give a series of openair concerts during the summer nights, and the Council was asked to assist by having some form of light placed in Cass,Square. The request was referred to the Town Clerk. The Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union has arranged to hold its annual excursion and picnic at Hokitika as usual this summer, and has been granted the use of Cass Square on January 28th.

During the month of October fifty earcases of meat (chiefly muttons) were delivered at Hokitika from the N.Z. Refrigerating Coy’s stores at Christchurch. The freezing company paid in slaughtering fees £2 16s 6d to the local Borough Council on the month’s consignments. The Hokitika abattoir manager reports for the month of October as follows: Examined 13 cows, 26 heifers, 51 bullocks, 218 sheep, 11 lambs, 11 pigs, 7 calves. Condemned nil. Fees for month £54 4s 6d (last year £54 12s 6d). The Borough workmen, according to the foreman’s report, were in the past two weeks occupied in laying down ten chains of kerbing in Fitzherbert St. between Park and Tudor Streets, and ths footpath gravelled, also a portion of Gibson’s Quay footpath was gravelled between Hall and Bealey Street, finishing this section, which was kerbed the previous month. Growth consisting of gorse and blackberries, was cleared at the corner of Weld and Rolleston Streets, in Tudor Street, and in Stafford Street, between Rolleston and Davie Streets, on both sides of the road. Drains were cleaned out in Weld Streets, and in Sale Street between Stafford and Weld Streets. Drainage pipes were put in across Sale Street footpath near Aliss Walker’s, and across Rolleston Street footpath at Miss Thompson’s property. During the month nineteen 18-inch and two 1-ft pipes were made. The water in the reservoir averaged 6 ft 6 ins for the month.

At a sitting of the Native Land Court, held at Kaiapoi on Friday, Judge Gilfedder dismissed an application of Retitia Aleihana for a reduction of the allowance payable to Mrs Emma Tainui, senr, of Arahura, from the estate of the late Hoani Tainui. The Judg'e ordered the present scale of payment to continue. Borough Affairs.—At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council, there were present: Alessrs A. C. Armstrong. G. W. Heenan, G. Heinz, J. King, I). J. Evans, A. R. Elcock and T. W. Duff. The Treasurer reported receipts £lB6 16s 2d, payments £lO4 19s 2d, bank credit balance £1363 2s 9d, loan account credit £69 16s. Accounts amounting to £lO4 19s 2d wore passed for payment. Air Armstrong reported that Air Jeffries and he had for £24 purchased a dray, and this action was approved. The Acting Town Clerk reported in connection with the licensing of fish shops that it would be necessary to bring the regulations of the Health Act into force, which would ensure the registration of all fish shops, ice cream shops, whitebait factories, etc. —Received; consideration deferred. A report was also submitted stating that necessary repairs to the road to the rubbish dump would cost £5 and until this was done action could not be taken against carters for not depositing rubbish in the. appointed place. It was resolved to put the road in order at once, and that the notification be then given that prosecutions would follow a failure to deposit rubbish in the appointed place. The Town Clerk reported progress made in connection of insurance against accidents to be taken out by owners of petrol stands. It was resolved to give a final 14 days’ notice, and then take definite action. The question of th? business to be brought before each meeting was raised by Air Elcock, and it was resolved that a precis be supplied three days before each meeting night, to members when being notified of the meeting. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: —From Hume Pipe Coy, Auckland, forwarding quotations for water mains for renewing Lake Kanieri pipe line.—Received, and referred to Water works Committee, with a request for a. report on the water supply for next meeting. He felt that most of the money would not be spent on the roads. The motion was carried. From Under Secretary, Public Works Department, Wellington, forwarding copy of. draft regulations under Alotor Vehicles Act, 1924, and asking for constructive criticism in respect of regulations.—Received, and referred to the Automobile Association for prompt attention. From Westland Hospital Board, notifying Council, under Local Government Loans Board Regulations, of its intention to purchase Mrs Halliday’s Maternity Home in Hampden Street as a Maternity Home for this district. From District Medical Health Officer, forwarding copy of Health Inspector’s report re wooden drain in Livingstone 1 Street. —Referred to Works Committee. From Airs C. E. Harcourt, asking that the drain at the corner of Brittan and Hampden Streets be cleaned, as it is in an unsatisfactory condition.—Referred to Foreman. From Mr A. Cowie, Post Office Hotel, pointing out: (1) That the wooden kerbing at his frontage is decayed and unsightly, and asking that concrete kerbing be substituted; (2) that the present sewer trap at the corner of Hamilton and Sewell Street be replaced by a gully trap.—Received.
