KEY LEFT BROKEN.
IN BANK STRONG ROOM. SOMEBODY BAULKED. (Per Press Assn.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. Last night the premisse of the National Bank at the corner of Hereford and Manchester Streets, were under continuous police surveillance. When the Bank was opened yesterday morning, the big door of the strong room could not be opened, and the staff had no access to the money, books or documents necessary to the 1 bank’s business. Temporary accommodation in money was obtained from another bank, however. A locksmith discovered that portion of a broken key was stuck in the strong room lock. This piece could not be disldoged, and a. hole had to be cut in the door. This task was completed at 1 p.m., and the contents of the strong room were found to be intact. The outside doors of the building bore no trace of having been tampered with. All the issued keys of the strong room were accounted for. The key broken in the lock was not one of these. Some unauthorised person, it ii assumed, made an attempt tc open the strong room. The bank officials and the police arc reticent about the affair. BURGLARY. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 1. During the temporary absence of the occupants, a residence at Terrace End was burglariously entered, and a quantity of goods, including jewellery, clothing, etc, valued at thirty I pounds, was stolen. EX-MANAGER COMMITTED. CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. William Roy McDonald, ex-manager of the. Christchurch branch, charged with the theft of sums totalling £654, the property of the Guardian Assurance Coy., pleaded not guilty, and was committed .to the Supreme Court for trial.
