MARATHON SWIM.
CANADIAN CONTEST. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn'). VANCOUVER, August 31. At Toronto, more than two hundred swimmers started in the twenty-one miles Canadian National Exhibition Marathon to-day, for purses totalling fifty thousand "dollars. George Young quit after the start, when Vierkotter was leading. The cold waters of Lake Ontario defeated many of the world’s best swimmers, in the twenty-one miles swim for prizes, to which William Wrigley, junr, and the Canadian National Exhibition each contributed twenty-five thousand dollars. Onlj fifty competitors remained in the water at the end of six hours, out of 250 starters. Many favourites retired earlv. Among the early quitters were Ed. "Keating, Harold Waters (New Zealand), Byron Summers, John O’Halloran and George Clayton, but Ernest Vierkotter led by three-quarters of a mile after fourteen miles were covered. George Michel was in sixth place. Vierkotter won the race.
Won by Two Miles FRENCHMAN SECOND. OTTAWA, August 31. A Toronto message states that Vierkotter won the first prize in the Ontario Swimming Marathon, his time being eleven hours forty-three minutes. He finished strongly, being two miles ahead of the nearest dpzen competitors. He trod water, bowed and threw kisses to the spectators lining flic shore. Georges Michel, of France, came second. Arthur Compton (California) was third. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn <Sr Sun Cable) OTTAWA, Sept. 1. Correction.—William Erickson, of New York, was last to finish in the swimming marathon. Owing to the withdrawal of others, he won third prize, as only three men completed the course.
