Mrs W. Batt (Nelson) is visiting her sister Mrs L. McNeil, Cobden. Mr P. Gallagher, of Cronadun, is at a visitor to Greymouth, being tne guest of Mr and Mrs J. Crowley. Miss K. Payton, of Wellington, arrived by Tuesday's express on a visit to her sister, Mrs W. Jones, of Greymouth. Miss Joan Baker, the clever young Hokitika elocutionist, who was yesterday a visitor to the Greymouth Competitions, will be among the contestants on Saturday. Mrs George Malloy returned to | Christchurch by the express on Saturlay, after a holiday visit with her mother, Mrs Joseph Manera, of Kokapotahi, South Westland. Among the guests staying at the Albion Hotel are: Mr and Mrs Ingram, Mr and Mrs D. Roberts (Hokitika); Messrs Barrell, F. Kent, J. E. Hood (Christchurch).
Recent arrivals staying at Bevington’s include Mr and Mrs Sparks (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Taylor (Wellington), Messrs J. S. Sampson and Mclndoe (Christchurch). The following candidates have been selected to represent the various parties in the Greymouth Municipal Band’s Queen Carnival. —Band: Miss Doreen Mcßrearty; Trades, Miss Lena McMaster; Sports, Miss Doreen O’Hallahan. An inquest was yesterday held as to the tragic death on Tuesday of Master Vai Armstrong, the fifteen-year-old son of Mr H. T. Armstrong, M.P. for Christchurch East. The verdict was that death was due to asphyxiation, caused by a rope becoming accidentally .coiled round the boy’s neck as he was trying to reach a bicycle on the shelf. It is reported that the Rectorship of Canterbury College has been offered to Dr James Hight, as from February Ist, 1928. Dr Hight, who has been DeputyRector for many years, is at present filling the chair of History at Leeds University. He is expected back in New Zealand at the end of the year or early in next year. It was decided at grant to Dr C. Chilton, the present Rector, one year’s leave of absence from February, 1928. In view of her pending departure from the district, Mrs T. Kinsella, who has resided in Blackball for the past 18 years, was presented with a solid leather suit case by the League Club and Soccer Association, the gift being handed to the recipient by Mr Hogg, who, with Mr MeLuskie (League) and Mr MeNicol (Soccer) spoke of Mrs Kinsella’s good qualities, more especially her patronage of all out-of-door sports during her residence in the district, and expressed their best wishes for her future happiness. The staff also made a presentation of a manicure set. Mrs Kinsella suitably responded. West Coast Hospitality is a bye-word to all. The new Stonehurst Private Hotel, Latimer Square, in like manner extends a hearty welcome to all guests. The management’s aim at all times i» to make everyone feel “at home.” This house is well and favourably d known to many West Coasters and all are invited when visiting Christchurch to make it their headquarters.
